That declaration was the first thing I heard as the students came into the classroom today. They were very excited that today was a holiday! (and what could be more exciting than Groundhog Day anyway?)
Anyway…
I taught quite a bit today. I also made quite a bit of mistakes. I tried doing an art project with them even though I didn’t exactly have all the materials I needed for it. –you just can’t find everything here that you can at home- I decided to try it anyway, and it just didn’t turn out so well. I felt bad and beat myself up about it, but the students didn’t seem to mind or notice too much. Mr. Pye told me afterwards, “Well, now you know what not to do.” Very true!
The afternoon went better; I read out loud to them and taught their Bible and spelling lessons. I also figured out more what I’m going to be teaching the rest of my time here. After this week, we have 2 whole weeks off for Chinese New Year! (I definitely came to the right country for student teaching!) Then after that, I’ll be taking on more subjects: Reading is next, then Math, then Social Studies, then a Science unit that I’ll be writing. Finally, I’ll be teaching a Reading unit to the fourth grade class. (instead of teaching Reading in 5th grade the rest of the time) The fourth grade class is larger and more challenging behavior-wise, but they’ll give me a more authentic student teaching experience, so I hear. (my 5th graders are spoiling me J I’m excited about doing the reading unit with 4th grade, though, because I get to teach on the book Number the Stars! That’s so exciting to me because I spent about 2 months writing a unit study for that book in a class a couple years ago. So a lot of my work for that is done already! Less planning time is always a good thing!
