I’ve gotten to spend a lot of time with friends here this weekend. Today we biked to a beautiful park by Dianchi lake for the afternoon. It was really tropical and Asian, which made me happy! Just as we were leaving, it started pouring rain. We waited till the worst of it passed, but still managed to get pretty wet! Kunming needs more rain, but I like it best when it just rains during the night.
Our class Passover celebration went really well on Friday. We had to use saltine crackers for matza and wasabi for horseradish, but other than that, I think it was pretty authentic. About 25 people came altogether. Mr. Pye led everyone through the Passover Haggadah (“the telling” of how G-d rescued His people from Egypt and how J is our perfect Passover lamb. It was a really good and meaningful time together, and the first time for many of the families to celebrate Passover. I’m so thankful for several of the students’ moms who helped me organize, prepare food, and decorate. I couldn't have done it without them.
Only one week of school left! It looks like it will be a busy one. This week is school spirit week. It just so happens the students in Mr. Pye’s class are the reigning spirit week champions, and they’re going all out to hold the title for spring semester (and win an ice cream party if they do). The stakes are high, and Mr. Pye has some ideas for winning costumes, (the teachers have to go all out too) so this week should definitely be interesting to say the least!
This week I’ll also be taking the students out of class one by one to give them DRA (developmental reading assessment) tests. I learned how to do these in my methods classes at CIU, so it’s exciting to be able to do it on my own with these kids.
I’ll also have a lot of grading to do this week because both classes are turning in their science research reports and giving presentations on their topics to finish out our astronomy unit.
